Father Cicero: History, Life, Prayer to Father Cicero
Cícero Romão Batista, better known as Father Cícero or as Padim Ciço, was a Catholic priest who was born in Ceará and who lived between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Having become extremely popular for his sympathy and his deeds, the priest is considered one of the patrons of the Northeast, and represents one of the most important historical figures for the region.

Cícero Batista, son of Joaquina Romana and Joaquim Barbosa, was born on March 24, 1844, in the city of Crato.
From early on, the religious was deeply involved with Christianity. Thus, even at the age of 12, influenced by the biography of St. Francis de Sales - a French priest, the young man made a vow of chastity.
In 1860, at age 16, Cicero went to study in Paraíba, where he lived until 1862, when his father died and he had to return to Crato to help with family expenses. At the age of 21, the young man moved to Fortaleza, where he joined the seminary and was ordained a priest.
When Cicero was 28 years old, he met the city of Juazeiro do Norte. Delighted with the village, the religious decided to move there, which happened a year later, in 1872. Incidentally, the legend says that this sudden change was driven by a dream that man had, in which Jesus Merciful appeared to him and I asked him to go and take care of the needy.
Arriving in Juazeiro, Cicero worked to stimulate the growth of the city, promoting reforms and a strong evangelization. This made him very popular with the population and gained great influence.
This prestige grew widely in 1889, the year in which an extraordinary event occurred. The accounts tell that when Cicero, in an usual task, delivered the communion to the nun Maria de Araújo, the wafer became blood in the woman's mouth.
This so astonished society at the time that the bishop of Fortaleza sent two inquiries to ascertain the case in order to ascertain whether a miracle had happened or not. The first commission witnessed the transformations, attesting that the episode was of divine order. The second, however, denied the miracle, which prevailed.
As the priest did not agree to this verdict, he resolved to protest, which the bishop saw as insubordination. Then the superior suspended Cicero, who was prevented from carrying out the practices common to a priest.
For not having been able to annul this decision, the religious ended up joining the politics, being named mayor of Juazeiro. In addition, he was elected Deputy Governor of the State, but never came to hold office.
On July 20, 1934, at the age of 90, the religious died. He was buried in the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, in Juazeiro, city where he also died.
