Who was (brief biography)
Father Cícero Romão Batista was an important Brazilian religious leader. He was born in 1844 in the state of Ceará.
In the year 1889, Father Cícero gained notoriety in the Northeast, as a fact gained national repercussion. It is said that, during a mass in the church of Juazeiro (Ceará), the consecrated host by him turned into blood in the mouth of a woman.
The local population came to regard the priest as a miracle worker. The Catholic Church, not agreeing with the events, considered it as mystical and forbade it from exercising the priesthood. In 1898 he traveled to Rome where he obtained the acquittal of Pope Leo XIII. However, he remained banned from celebrating the rituals of Catholicism.
He entered politics and was mayor of the city of Juazeiro for 15 years. He died in 1934, becoming one of the leading religious figures in the country's history. To this day, the tomb of Padre Cícero is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Brazil.
